Wait...what?

I just finished the 5th book in the Anne of Green Gable Series...called 'Anne's House of Dreams'.

I was reading along and came across this GEM of a sentence.

Now I must warn you.  The following words may seem PG-13...or more like R.  I know right?  What?  Anne of Green Gables?

So let me paint the picture.  The following line from the book comes about to describe Anne and her friend Leslie's interactions among themselves and also with Anne's new little baby.

And I quote:

"When their work was done and Gilbert was out of the way, they gave themselves over to shameless orgies of lovemaking and ecstasies of adoration..."

What?  Don't look at me like that!

Don't be dirty!

It's Anne of Green Gables for crying out loud.

hahahaha.

Well, one thing is for sure.  We certainly don't use language in the same way that we used to.  I don't think it would go over so well to describe my time with a dear friend in the same way.

Anyways, it made me laugh.  I felt the need to enlighten you on the vocabulary of old.  Where sentences were full of words like orgies, lovemaking, and shameless ecstasies.  Oh the good ole' days.  :)

  1. I think I remember thinking those same thoughts when reading that part! :-) Kinda awkward, but kinda cool. Reminds me of when Trav and I were reading Pollyanna out loud to one another while dating (?? I have no idea why we were reading THAT book), but most of the sentences ended in ," ejaculated Aunt Polly. Ejaculated was quite the synonomous word with "said" back then! :-) And don't you just love Anne's House of Dreams? My fave... well, that and Rilla of Ingleside (the last one).

  2. Ha! Jason and I joke about that one all the time..."ejaculated". HA! One of his 2nd language English students used that one and he had to hold back his laughter. I say we bring it back baby. How come all of these words that used to be so commonly used for positive things are now considered so dirty? :)
